This past weekend I had the privilege of participating in the celebration honoring Angeles Arrien’s 40 years of teaching and the 15th Anniversary of the Angeles Arrien Foundation for Cross-Cultural Education and Research. Angeles is a cultural anthropologist, author, educator, corporate consultant and international wisdom-keeper and treasure.

In her landmark book, The Four Fold Way (Harper SanFrancisco, 1992) she writes:

“It is the work of all human beings to attend to the health of both their inner and outer houses: the inner house of ourselves and the limitless world within, and the outer house of the world in which we live our daily lives.”

Many people in the contemporary world feel little connection between their inner and outer houses. This is a condition that indigenous peoples of land and sea find sad, if not incomprehensible. This separation/disconnect contributes to many of the maladies which plague us in present times – maladies of personal well-being, the public health, and of planetary proportion.

Blending spiritual awareness, perennial wisdom, and social consciousness, Angeles’ teachings bridge these disconnects through her integration of ancient wisdom and contemporary knowledge, her multicultural perspective, and her inter-generational collaboration. She is truly a healer of gigantic dimension.
